Thursday, 10 January
Film at school: “Mediterraneo”
Director: G. Salvatores
Year: 1991
Length: 1’ 45”
“Mediterraneo” won an Oscar in 1992 for “Best Foreign Film.”
Plot: During the second world war, eight Italian soldiers are given orders to guard a small Greek island in the middle of the Mediterranean. Although apparently deserted, the eight soldiers slowly integrate with the local people and come to see themselves in a new light. Their radio broken, the soldiers are isolated until the arrival of a small airplane, whose pilot informs them of the extensive changes that have happened during the three years they have been on the island.

DINNER in one of the best Italian pizzerie (Pizzeria “Spera,” 1st prize in the World Championship of Pizza, 2002).

Film at school: “Il Postino,” winner of the Italian Cinema Festival award
Director: M. Radford & M. Troisi
Year: 1994
Length: 1’ 52”
Plot: With the arrival of the celebrated Chilean writer Pablo Neruda, forced into exile on a small, Mediterranean island, the postman Mario feels a strong attraction to the artist’s poetry. So, with the excuse of delivering the mail, he begins to learn the art of poetry.

Plot: A fun comedy by Benigni that presents the story of a man mistaken for a mafia boss. The notorious mafia boss Johnny Stecchino is forced to live hidden in a basement unless he can find someone that looks like him to take the fall for him.

Thursday, 31 January
Film at school: “Caro Diario”
Director: N. Moretti
Year: 1993
Length: 1’ 40”
Plot: The film is divided in three distinct episodes. In the first, the protagonist rides through the streets of Rome in summer. In the second, he decides to meet a friend in Lipari. The final episode covers the final stages of his battle against the sickness from which he has suffered for a year.
